Plants with high nutritional requirements are known as strong uptakers (cabbage, tomatoes, leeks, potatoes) and those with lower nutritional requirements low uptakers (beans, peas, strawberries, herbs). A raised bed has a very high nutrient content, even in the first year that it is used. Therefore, it is recommended that you plant mostly strong uptakers at the beginning. This is not just because the necessary nutrient content is there for them, but also because low uptakers could be damaged by a nutrient content which is too high. In the following years, as nutrient content decreases, the bed should be changed to low uptakers.
